The 7th birthday of freedom fighter Lieutenant Sheikh Jamal, the proud officer of Bangladesh Army, the second son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the greatest Bengali nation of all time, was celebrated on Wednesday. He was born on this day in 1954 in Tungipara of Gopalganj district. On 15 August 1975, Sheikh Jamal along with most of his family members including Father of the Nation Bangabandhu were killed by some misguided unruly army officers.

The Awami League is remembering Shaheed Sheikh Jamal on his 7th birthday with deep respect and love. At the initiative of Awami League, a special munajat will be held at 9 am on Wednesday (April 26) at Banani Cemetery to pay homage to Shaheed Sheikh Jamal in accordance with proper hygiene rules and seek forgiveness of his Holy Spirit.
During the Great War of Liberation in 1971, Sheikh Jamal was under house arrest along with other members of his family. He escaped from there and led the great war of liberation. After a very risky journey from Dhanmondi, Sheikh Jamal reached Agartala, India, where he joined the Mujib Bahini (Bangladesh Liberation Forces, BLF) and participated in the Liberation War at Sector 9.
Shaheed Sheikh Jamal was a patriotic, smart and meritorious army officer. He was a commissioned officer of the first batch of the long course of the Bangladesh Army. In 1974, Sheikh Jamal participated in a training camp as a cadet at the Yugoslav Military Academy. After training at Sandhurst Academy in Britain, he returned to the country and joined the 2nd East Bengal Regiment in Dhaka Cantonment as a Second Lieutenant.
In a short span of his service in the Second East Bengal, he left an impression of extraordinary professionalism and sincerity among the officers and soldiers. Within a few weeks, Sheikh Jamal became one of the officers and soldiers. He impressed the soldiers by taking part in the training grounds, tactics classes, and Obstacle crossings. The battalion trained the members of the boxing team.
He also served as a Battalion Duty Officer in the Cantonment on 14 August 1975. That night Dhanmondi returned from cantonment to house number 32.
On the night of 15 August 1975, Sheikh Jamal was killed along with other members of his family by a brutal bullet fired by the assassin. Happy birthday to everyone. But the most brutal massacre on August 15 faded his joy. The Bengali nation will forever remember with gratitude the contribution of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family in the freedom and liberation struggle.
