The Corona Situation in India: Media Coverage vs. Reality

We all know that India is one of the largest countries in the world in size and population. According to a 2019 survey, India’s population is over 136 crore. For your information, India has 29 states and 6 territories and most of them are larger in size than Bangladesh. From one state of India to another, people’s language, culture, food, physical appearance and everything changes.

The grim picture of India’s corona situation in the world media and Bangladeshi media for a week is just a picture of Delhi and especially some of the hospitals in Delhi. In fact, even in India, government hospitals are crowded during normal hours. Because, in a populous country like India where most of the people are poor, they have no choice but to go to government hospitals.

As I am in India for the sake of my studies, my family, friends and well-wishers have searched me many times after watching the news on TV and in the newspapers and told me to be careful. Talking to them, I realized in their voices how terrified they were to see this news and this incident happened not only to me but also to my friends from other countries including Bangladeshis. Everyone is getting news again and again by phone and message, telling them to be careful.

Now let me tell you my diary of the last few days. I am currently in the International Student Hostel at my university in Hyderabad. Just last week I traveled to Darjeeling, spent some time at a friend’s house in Kolkata and returned to Hyderabad via Odisha five days ago. In Hyderabad yesterday, we also had Iftar with some Bangladeshis in a restaurant outside. Our way of life is very normal here, public transport is running. People are pushing on the bus-metro. We are also going out, shopping, eating and wearing masks or hand sanitized type basic things going on as before.

The Corona Situation in India: Media Coverage vs. Reality
That being said, there is no reason to think that the situation in India as a whole is the same just by looking at the news from Delhi, and the media always exaggerates a little. However, since very few people are going through a very bad time, we should pray for them. In the end, the only wish is for the world to be healed.
