Holy Ramadan is the month of mercy, blessings, forgiveness and salvation. This month is the month of virtue, the month of forgiveness of sins, the month of arranging oneself with good deeds. Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. No person’s Islam is complete without fasting. By fasting, a person attains self-purification and special closeness to God. Allah the Almighty said, “O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become righteous’ (Surat al-Baqara, 183). No provision of Allah Almighty is aimless. There is a specific purpose behind each of his creations and provisions. Ramadan fasting is one of the pillars and rules of Islam. God has made it obligatory for the believers. One of the purposes of this provision is to acquire the quality of taqwa or fear of Allah. By observing proper fasting, Allah will save the fasting person from Hell. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Our great Rabb Irshad has said that fasting is a shield. By this the servant will save himself from the fire of Hell. Fasting is for me, and I will reward it ‘(Musnad Ahmad, Hadith-1469). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) further said, ‘The smell of the mouths of the fasting people is more fragrant to Allaah than the smell of mushrik’ (Saheeh Bukhari, Hadith 5926). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) further said, “Whoever fasts with faith in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven (Bukhari-36).
In some cases it is permissible not to fast or in some physical complications the fast may be broken: It is obligatory for Muslims to fast during the month of Ramadan. No adult Muslim is allowed to abandon this provision without the disability allowed by Islam. Whoever intentionally breaks the fast is a great sinner in the eyes of Islam and has a terrible punishment for the Hereafter. And for those who observe the proper fast, there are numerous rewards. Islam does not give any provision beyond the strength, ability and affordability of man. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And Allaah does not place on any soul a burden which is beyond its power” Allah’s command regarding fasting in the month of Ramadan is, “Whoever gets the month of fasting, his duty is to fast” (Surat al-Baqara: 185). In another verse, Allaah says, ‘Fasting is for certain days. If any of you are sick or on a trip, you have to fill in this number at another time. It is the duty of those who suffer the most to give food to the needy instead. If one acts honestly spontaneously, it is more beneficial for him. And fasting is better for you if you only knew. ‘It is permissible not to fast in that month for the very old, the chronic disease which is very difficult. You have to do it later. There is a danger of death in fasting, this should be in accordance with the advice of a scholar and an experienced physician with Islamic knowledge. If a pregnant woman is at risk of harm to her unborn child or if a breastfeeding mother is at risk of harm to herself or her breastfed baby by fasting, she can also perform kazaa at a convenient time later this month without fasting. Again, fasting is not necessary for the very old. In Islam, it is lawful for weak men and women not to fast due to weakness, old age, incurable illness, or old age.
