From January to March this year, a total of 13 domestic workers have been killed and tortured across the country. Four of the victims were killed and tortured. Three of them are at work and one is out of work. Besides, two have committed suicide. This information has come up in the survey of Bangladesh Institute of Labor Studies (BILS) based on the news published in different national dailies.
The survey report said one of the dead had been killed and three had mysteriously died. Two were raped, six were physically injured and severely tortured, and an unidentified man was severely tortured. After these incidents, a case has been filed in the concerned police station.
According to the report, more than 95 percent of the domestic workers in the country, including Dhaka, are women. The survey found that most of those killed, tortured and raped were between the ages of 18 and 33.
That being said, Bills’ calculations are based on information published in the country’s media, but the real situation is even more dire. Because in many cases of torture, compromise is made in the face of money and pressure. Domestic workers or their family members do not want to go to court because they are financially weak or do not have the courage to go. Influential people cover up many incidents of torture.
Bills has demanded that the perpetrators be brought under the law and appropriate punishment be given to the victims and appropriate compensation be given to the victims.
The report also said that the monitoring cell was in the process of monitoring the latest situation and assisting in taking action, communicating with the victims through trade unions and providing overall assistance.
