AKM Hafeez Akhter, Additional Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Intelligence Division, said the Hifazat riots at Motijheel’s Shapla Chattar were “very big incidents” and that it was taking them time to investigate.
Leaders and activists of Hifazat-e-Islam staged a massive violence in the surrounding area on May 5, 2013 from a rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel. Hefat leaders are still being arrested in the case filed by the police in that incident.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, DB Additional Commissioner Hafiz Akhter said another reason for not being able to complete the investigation into the case was that no innocent person should be found guilty. Having to collect a lot of data. Hafiz Akhtar said, “On the golden jubilee of independence, there was a massive sabotage in Baitul Mukarram centered on the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. By capitalizing on it, rumors were spread and massive violence was carried out in several districts including Brahmanbaria, Chittagong, Narayanganj and Sylhet. Those involved in the violence are being identified by looking at the video footage. Remand is being questioned, arguments are going on. Everyone has seen how the violence is going on all over the country, including arson. ‘
Hafiz Akhtar further said, “Action is being taken against those who were involved in sabotage and incited.” They will be convicted. However, care is being taken not to punish any innocent person. If anyone is innocent, let us know. Initiatives will be taken subject to information and evidence.
Regarding the case filed in connection with the 2013 riots, the police official said that they did not know what the Hefazat leaders had said to the Home Minister. However, action will be taken only against those who were involved or could be found involved.
Asked why the investigation into the incident at Shapla Chattar could not be completed in eight years, Hafiz Akhter said, “The incident at Shapla Chattar is huge. Information is needed to ensure the punishment of the people involved in the case filed. We have to collect them. Had to collect video footage. Other data has to be verified. That is why it is taking time to submit the final investigation report of the case. ‘
Regarding the case filed against the Hefazat leaders recently, he said the investigation of the recently filed case is underway. A lot of information is coming out during the interrogation. However, more relevant evidence is needed.
