Rozina Islam, a senior reporter of Prothom Alo, was taken to Shahbagh Police Station after being detained at the Secretariat for more than five hours.
Rozina Islam went to the Ministry of Health in the Secretariat around 3.30 pm on Monday to perform her professional duties. He was locked in a room there and his mobile phone was confiscated. At one stage, he fell ill there. After getting the news of Rozina Islam’s detention, journalists from different media went to the building of the Ministry of Health. But health ministry officials declined to comment on why Rozina had been detained for so long. Later in the afternoon, journalists gathered outside the secretariat to protest the harassment and detention of Rozina Islam.
Farida Yasmin, president of the National Press Club, told Prothom Alo that Rozina Islam is unique in investigative journalism. He has international recognition. It is unjust and unwelcome for such a journalist to be detained for hours while performing his professional duties. There is a need for a proper investigation into the reason for his detention and for not taking him to the hospital even after he became ill. Rozina Islam has been detained for a long time and the journalists present at the secretariat tried to know the statement of the secretary of the health department. But it was not possible to know the statement of the secretary.
Later, Health Ministry Information Officer Maidul Islam told reporters that a complaint had been lodged with the police against Rozina Islam for taking pictures of some documents. Rozina Islam has been taken to Shahbagh police station. Police said journalist Rozina Islam was brought to the police station following a complaint from the health ministry. Journalists of different media are standing in front of Shahbagh police station.Mursalin Nomani, president of the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity, strongly condemned the harassment of Rozina Islam for a long time. He demanded the immediate release of Rozina Islam from police custody.
