Police have rescued a 5-month-old child who was stolen from Naria in Shariatpur.
The child was rescued from a house in Shirangal village of the upazila on Friday (May 26) evening.
The name of the rescued child is Mahmud Hasan. Mahmud is the son of Billal Hossain Bepari of Dhanuka area of Sadar upazila.
Police have arrested a woman named Tania Sikder (30) in the incident. She is the daughter of Ajit Sikder of Swarnaghosh village in Sadar upazila.
Earlier in the day, the woman stole the baby from her house in Dhanuka of Shariatpur Sadar Upazila and fled.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Naria Police Station Abani Shankar confirmed the matter.
According to the police and the child’s family, the woman used to live in Billal Hossain Bepari’s house in Dhanuka area a few days ago. He left the rented house three months ago and moved elsewhere. On Friday, the woman came to visit the house and fled with the child.
When the child was not found, the family members kept looking for him in different places. A CCTV camera in front of the house showed the woman fleeing with the baby in her arms. The relatives then posted a picture of the child, a picture of the woman and a video of the theft on CCTV. In the afternoon, the driver of a pickup van saw the picture and contacted the child’s family by phone. Later, the police of Naria police station rescued the child by going to the address given by him. The woman was arrested at the time.
The child’s father Billal Hossain Bepari said, ‘The woman used to rent our house before. He used to visit us from time to time even after leaving our house. Friday was also coming normally. I put my son on his lap and went to perform the Friday prayers. At that opportunity, the woman fled with my son.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Naria Police Station Abani Shankar Kar said, “The child has been rescued from Sirangal village. The accused woman has been arrested. Since the incident took place in Shariatpur Sadar, a case will be filed at Sadar’s Palang Model Police Station.
