Trawler sinks in Jajira: The body of child Khadija was recovered two days later

The body of a child named Khadija has been recovered after a trawler sank in the Padma River at Jajira in Shariatpur. The body of a three-year-old child was recovered around 4am on Saturday (May 29).

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Naval Police Majhirghat Farid Mridul Chandra Kapalik confirmed the matter.

All shipping from Jazira Ghat was closed since last Tuesday due to inclement weather. On Thursday (May 26) afternoon, some people were crossing the Padma River in a trawler from Naodoba Zero Point, east of Jajira, to Mawa Shimulia Ghat. On the way, the trawler reached the middle river in Palerchar area and was caught in the waves and drowned. Upon receiving the news, Jazira naval police, fire service personnel and locals started the rescue operation. At that time 11 people were rescued alive.

Besides, the body of freedom fighter Abdur Rahman Akand (60), a resident of Fakir Mahmud Akand Kandi village of Jajira upazila was recovered at that time.

Tanmoy Das, 19, a second-year student of Chittagong Government City College, died after taking a bath in the Karnafuli River in Sitarghat area of ​​Shilchhari in Kaptai. It sank around 4:30 pm on Friday (May 26). Tammoy’s body was recovered later in the night.

Tanmoy Das (19) is the son of Subal Das, a resident of Tiger Pass area of ​​Chittagong metropolis. According to his friends, he is a second year HSC student of Chittagong City College.

Tammoy’s cousin Krishna Nath said that a total of nine friends, including Tanmoy from Chittagong, came to visit his house and later visited the Sita Ghat temple on the banks of the Karnafuli river. After visiting the temple, they took a bath in the river Karnafuli at the nearby ghat in the afternoon. At one stage, Tanmoy disappeared in the river in the blink of an eye. Later, his friends did not find him even after many searches and called the emergency service number 999. When the matter was later reported to the Kaptai Fire Service, the Kaptai Fire Service personnel immediately rushed to the spot. They came and started searching for Tanmoy and informed the divers of Rangamati Fire Service. After 6 pm, first the divers of Kaptai Naval Base Shaheed Moazzem and then the divers of Rangamati District Fire Service jointly went down to the river Kornafuli to rescue the missing Tanmoy. Later at around 8 pm the divers recovered Tanmoy’s body. After his rescue, he was taken to the Upazila Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Chandraghona Police Station OC Mohammad Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury confirmed the incident and said his body was recovered by the fire service and navy divers at 8pm. The body of the deceased Tanmoy has been handed over to his parents without an autopsy for humanitarian reasons.
