It has been alleged that a housewife named Asma Khatun (36), a mother of four, committed suicide in Belkuchi, Sirajganj as she could not bear her husband’s abuse. The incident took place at Shaldair village in Bhangabari union of the upazila on Friday morning. The deceased was identified as Asma Khatun, daughter of Sarabesh Ali of Shaldai village.

According to family sources, Asma was married in 2004 to Nuru Islam Mollah, 45, son of Mokaddech Mollah of Gabgachhi village in the same union of the upazila. After the marriage, the husband and wife had been arguing over family matters. This was resolved through several local arbitration meetings. Two months ago, Nur Islam left his four children and sent his wife to her father’s house. During this time, Asma Khatun sometimes went to her husband’s house to see their children, but her husband Nur Islam tortured and abused her in various ways. Last week, when their children visited their mother Asma Khatun, her husband Nur Islam forcibly took them home. Unable to bear this grief, Asma committed suicide on Friday morning in her father’s house with a dharna in her bedroom.

Belkuchi Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Mostafa said on Friday evening that the body was recovered and sent to Sirajganj 250-bed Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital for autopsy on Friday afternoon. He said Asma Khatun’s father would file a case against his wife for inciting her to commit suicide.
