A man has been granted bail in Lalmonirhat for allegedly insulting the Quran

A man named Shahidunnabi Jewel of Burimari upazila of Lalmonirhat has been beaten to death for insulting the Holy Quran. The High Court has granted bail to an accused named Shariful Islam.

Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice. The High Court bench of Iqbal Kabir passed the order on Sunday. Advocate Hasan Mahmud Khan was the lawyer for the bail applicant.

The deceased was identified as Shahidunnabi Jewel, son of Abdul Wazed Miah of Shalban Mistripara area in Rangpur. He is a former librarian of Rangpur Cantonment Public School and College and a former student of Dhaka University. Being fired last year left him mentally unbalanced. Shahidunnabi Jewel went to visit Burimari on the afternoon of October 29 last year with a companion named Sultan Rubayat Sumon. In the afternoon, they performed Asr prayers at Burimari Central Jame Mosque. But Jewel and Sultan Rubayat Sumon were detained by locals in a room of the adjoining Union Parishad building on suspicion of insulting the Holy Qur’an.

Upon receiving the news, Patgram Upazila Chairman, UNO, OC attended the Burimari Union Parishad. Rumors spread that two young men had been arrested for insulting the Qur’an. At this time, the agitated mob broke the door and window of the Union Parishad building, snatched Jewel from the administration and beat him to death. Later, the body was dragged to Patgram-Burimari highway and burnt to ashes. The National Human Rights Commission’s investigation team, after inspecting the site on November 1 last year, said there were no incidents of insulting the Qur’an in the mosque. Also, the investigation committee of the district administration did not find the truth of insulting the Qur’an.

Three separate cases were filed in connection with the burning of Jewel. In one of the cases, the son of Patuddin Upazila Samsuddin Islam. Shariful Islam was arrested in early November last year.
