Locals detained 14 Rohingyas while fleeing from Bhasanchar to Sandwip in Chittagong. They were apprehended from the bank of the river near the embankment of Chowdhury Bazar Ward No. 1 of Maitbhanga Union at 4.30 am on Sunday.
It is learned that the detained Rohingyas came to the Sandwip coast by boat from Bhasanchar Rohingya camp on Saturday evening through brokers. They intended to reach Cox’s Bazar via Chittagong and go to Malaysia illegally. Mizanur Rahman Mizan, chairman of Maitbhanga Union Parishad, kept the detained Rohingyas in the custody of Mizan village police and later handed them over to Sandwip police.
The arrested Rohingyas are Ayatul Karim (30), Ashraf Ullah (6), Nazim Ullah (7), Yasmin Ara (29), Salekha Begum (14), Taslima (18), Umme (18), Mushfiqa (18), Md. Safayet (18), Oli Ullah (12), Md. Ans (10), Rozina (15), Shukatara (15) and Md. Imtiaz (18).
In the last one and a half months, the police arrested a total of 29 Rohingyas who had fled from the Bhasanchar Rohingya camp to Sandwip in four phases with the help of the general public.
Sandwip Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bashir Ahmed Khan said the Rohingyas detained from the river bank of Maitbhanga Union were brought to the police station. A case is being prepared against them.
