Today marks the 20th anniversary of the bombing of the Baniyarchar Catholic Church in Muksudpur, Gopalganj. In 2001, 10 members of the Christian community were killed and 50 injured in an attack on a church while praying.
The police could not file a complaint in the court for a long time. As a result, the trial did not start. The families and relatives of the victims are spending their days with frustration and anger.
The church filed two lawsuits in connection with the bombing. A murder case. The other is filed under the Explosives Act. In the last 20 years, the investigation officer has been changed 23 times. But the charge sheet was not submitted.
Gopalganj District and Sessions Judge’s Court Public Prosecutor (PP) Subhash Chandra Jayadhar said the case is now being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The investigation may be hampered by repeated changes by the investigating officer. The trial will begin after the chargesheet is filed in the court.
Investigating officer of the case, CID inspector Gopalganj Munshi Asadullah said, “There are two cases in the Baniachar incident. Several militants have been arrested. Before me, 22 investigation officers have been transferred. I have been seriously investigating this case since I took charge. I am trying to settle the case as soon as possible.
Sanjivan Barai was killed in the bombing. His father Bijendra Barai said on his mobile phone on Wednesday, ‘I have been seeking justice since 2001. No one listens to our demands. Having to struggle in old age. No money, no money. I am eating or not eating. Now no one wants to give Hawlat. If Choyalda (son) had survived, he might not have had to suffer so much. Choyalda died, I didn’t even get his trial. ‘
The deceased Sumon Haldar’s father Sukhranjan Haldar and mother Anna Haldar are both ill. The walk has almost stopped. After that incident, they received one lakh rupees as government grant. He kept that money in the bank. Get a profit on that money every month. And get help from the church 500 rupees. That is how their family somehow survives.
Sumon’s parents said, ‘It’s been a long time. But the boy’s murder was not tried. That is the demand of the government that we get justice before we die.
Father Jaren Rinku Gomez, in charge of the Baniyarchar Catholic Church, said, “Every year on this day we hold various programs, including prayer meetings. But because of Corona, those programs have been limited. Our only demand to the government is to expedite the trial of the brutal murder in this religious institution.
