The Bangladesh Group Theater Federation has been demanding that 1 percent of the total budget should be for culture. The budget announced by the government did not reflect this time. The organization has expressed anger over this. This was stated by Bangladesh Group Theater Federation in a press release sent to Prothom Alo.
According to a press release signed by Kamal Bayazid, Secretary General of Bangladesh Group Theater Federation, the proposed allocation for the Ministry of Culture is Tk 56 crore in the proposed budget of Tk 7,3,061 crore for the fiscal year 2021-22. There has been widespread outcry in the cultural arena over this issue.
The organization said, ‘Bangladesh Group Theater Federation’s nearly 500 drama organizations spread across the country think that cultural activists have played a major role in building a prosperous country in the spirit of the liberation war in independent Bangladesh. In order to build a conscientious nation with humane values, there is no alternative but to make the masses culturally minded.
In order to build an enlightened Bangladesh by eradicating corruption, drugs, terrorism and bigotry, massive efforts must be made at the grassroots level for the development of indigenous culture in villages, towns, schools, colleges and universities. This responsibility will be performed by the Ministry of Culture. Therefore, we strongly demand that at least 1 percent be allocated to the Ministry of Culture instead of the proposed 0.096 percent of the national budget. We call on the government to implement this demand so as not to make the nation backward and uncultured.
