Police have filed an investigation report against seven people, including Samiul alias Zulkarnain Sayer Khan, accused in a case filed under the Digital Security Act for posting anti-government posts on social media Facebook. One of the main characters in a report published in Al Jazeera is Samiul alias Zulkarnain Sayer.
Afshar Ahmed, sub-inspector of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) of the police investigating the case, submitted the report to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Sunday. However, four people, including writer Mushtaq Ahmed, have been acquitted in the case.
The other accused mentioned in the report are cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore, Didarul Bhuiyan, Dhaka coordinator of Rashtrachinta, Minhaj Mannan, former director of Dhaka Stock Exchange, Tasneem Khalil of Netra News, Ashiq Imran and Swapan Wahid. Other acquitted accused are Shahed Alam, a journalist living in the United States, Asif Mohiuddin, a blogger in Germany, and Philipp Schumacher.
Earlier, on January 13 this year, Mohsin Sardar, the investigating officer in the case, and writer Mushtaq Ahmed filed a chargesheet in the court. Besides, eight persons were acquitted in the charge sheet. However, the prosecution objected to the chargesheet. Then on February 10 this year, Judge of the Bangladesh Cyber Tribunal Assam Jaglul Hossain accepted the objection and directed the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) to investigate and submit a report.
May 5 last year, the warrant officer of RAB-3 CPC-1. Abu Bakar Siddique filed a case under the Digital Security Act with Ramna Police Station in the name of 11 people. Besides, 5-6 unidentified people have been accused.
According to the case, the accused posted various posts on the Facebook page called ‘IM Bangladeshi’, including propaganda or rumors, to tarnish the image or reputation of the state or to spread confusion, which created confusion among the people and deteriorated law and order. The admin of that page Shayer Zulkarnain and I, Kishore, Ashiq Imran, Philip Samachar, Swapan Wahid, Mostaq Ahmed and five other editors have been managing the Facebook page for a long time.
Ahmed Kabir Kishore, Tasnim Khalil, Zulkarnain alias Samiul, Shahed Alam and Asif Mohiuddin have been found to have evidence of ‘conspiratorial chatting against the state’, the statement said, adding, . Reviewing the signs, anti-state posts, epidemic coronavirus, spreading rumors with cartoons of various leaders of the ruling party found evidence of confusion among the people. Besides, evidence of conspiratorial chatting against the state with Tasnim Khalil, Shayer Zulkarnain, Shahed Alam and Asif Mohiuddin has been found on WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
