Indian women’s star tennis player Sania Mirza will enter the women’s doubles category in the Tokyo Olympics next month by pairing with Ankita Raina. Before this, Sania has to play in the third Grand Slam of the year at Wimbledon where her partner will be Bethanie Mattek Sands of America.
Wimbledon is starting from Sunday or today. Sania has been the champion in the women’s doubles category of Wimbledon in 2015. After becoming a mother in the year 2018, Sania returned to the court in January last year.
Talking to our partner newspaper Times of India, Sania said, ‘I am excited to play with Bethanie Mattek Sands at Wimbledon. I have many memories attached to this place. 34-year-old Sania will compete in the Olympics for the fourth time. With her landing in Tokyo, she will become the first Indian female athlete to compete in the Olympics four times.
Sania said, ‘I am lucky that I got a chance to play 3 times in the Olympics. This will be my fourth Olympics. After becoming a mother, playing in the Olympics is something I could only dream of. I am really excited about it.
Ankit Raina’s singles ranking is 182 while in doubles he is at number 95. Six-time Grand Slam champion Sania is heavily influenced by Ankita Raina, who won the WTA title in Australia this year.
Sania said about Ankita, ‘I have been watching her from a very young age. She is eager to learn. He is very disciplined and that is probably his strength. She has been participating in the WTA Tour for the past one year. He is in the top 100 in the world doubles ranking. I know very well that she too will be very excited to play in her first Olympics. Of course he needs experience to play at a higher level now. But the way she has been playing consistently, she understands the game at a higher level.
‘Hope in mixed doubles’
Regarding the medal, Sania said that as always, this time also we can expect in mixed doubles. Sania said, “To be honest, whenever we go to the Olympics, we expect mixed doubles. Last time Rohan Bopanna and I got very close. If all goes well, we will definitely be able to win a medal. We all know we are not contenders but in Olympics anything is possible.
