- How many doses of corona vaccine will be available by the end of the year?
- Center had said in May, 216 crore doses between August-December
- Now filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court and presented different figures
- Said- 135 crore doses will be available between August and December
A different picture has been placed before the Supreme Court from the claims made by the central government last month on the availability of the Kovid-19 vaccine. On May 13, it was said that between August and December, over two billion (216 crore) doses would be provided in five months. However, in an affidavit presented in the Supreme Court on Saturday (June 26), the Center said that 135 crore doses would be arranged between August and December. That is, 81 crore less doses will be available in the country this year.
In the affidavit, the Center said that there are a total of 93-94 crore people above the age of 18 years. They need 186 to 188 crore doses to be vaccinated by the end of this year. The government has claimed to have provided 51.6 crore doses by July. The Center said that out of these 35.6 crore doses have been given to the states.
What was the government saying in May?
NITI Aayog member VK Paul had said on 13 May 2021, “Two billion (216 crore) doses will be made in the country in five months for India and the people of the country. The vaccine will be available to everyone.” You can see the figures of which vaccine was estimated to be available and Dr. Paul’s statement in the video below.

Now what did the Supreme Court say?
In the affidavit on behalf of the central government, it was said that till July 31, a total of 51.6 crore doses have been prepared. Between August and December, 135 crore doses will be arranged. For this, availability of 50 crore doses of Kovishield, 40 crores of Covaccine, 10 crores of Sputnik V as well as other vaccines will be ensured.
May to June… what has changed?
There is a difference of 81 crores in the estimates of May and June, which vaccines will be available? Its figures have also been reduced. The government had expressed hope in May that by the end of the year, 8 different vaccines would be available in the country. These included vaccines from Biological E, Bharat Biotech Nasal Vaccine, Novavax, Zydus Cadila, Geneva Biopharma, in addition to the vaccines currently available.
Now the government has said in the affidavit filed in the SC that 5 vaccines will be available by the end of the year. The names of Bharat Biotech Nasal Vaccine, Novavax and Geneva Biopharma are missing from the list.
27.3% people have taken the first dose
On behalf of the Center, the Supreme Court was told that 44.2% of people above 45 years of age have received the first dose of the vaccine. 13 percent of people between 18 and 44 have received the first dose. So far, 27.3 percent of the vaccinated people have been given the first dose.
Now the government is talking about providing 135 crore doses between August-December.
