The BCCI has now considered increasing the Indian Premier League (IPL). In the year 2022, there will be a total of 10 teams instead of eight. With this, there can be a total of 74 matches.
The IPL management has already got the season done with 10 teams. The board did this in 2011 but that format had to face a lot of criticism. Although the boards are ready for this this time also. Then there were a total of 94 matches in the season.
However, the English newspaper Hindustan Times quoted a BCCI official as saying, “We are not ready for 94 matches yet.” “Our broadcasters are not ready for this. There is also a question about the availability of foreign players and at the same time it is difficult to find time for so many matches. In the coming years, we will try to find a bigger window.
It will take two and a half months for a tournament of 94 matches. Looking at the busy schedule, it seems impossible to get it done. On top of this, ICC has a global tournament every year. The result is that the BCCI will have to go on the 74-match model.
In the 74 match format, the teams will be divided into two groups. There will be five teams in each group. Each team will play 14 matches on the league stage. In this, four matches will be played in their group on home-away lines with the teams of their group. Apart from this, there will be home-away matches with a team from the other group.
The remaining four matches will be played on home or away lines with the remaining teams of the other group. It will be selected on random basis.
From 14 extra matches, BCCI will earn an additional Rs 800 crore. This includes media and sponsorship rights. This earnings is expected to increase further in 2023 when the governing body will float tenders for new media rights.
The board may invite tenders for new teams next month. He wants to finalize the process before the auction in December.
The board is expected to earn around Rs 2000 crore from each team. Kolkata-based company RP Goenka Group, formerly the owner of Rising Pune Supergiant, is in the race. Apart from this, the Adani Group has also shown interest in buying the team.
