- Jyotiraditya Scindia was in charge of Western Uttar Pradesh at that time.
Jyotiraditya Scindia He may have left the Congress in March 2020, but even before his departure, he had become the reason for a major setback for the party. Just before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Priyanka Chaturvedi, who was the party spokesperson at that time, suddenly quit the Congress and joined Shiv Sena. Journalist Rashid Kidwai’s recent book The House of Scindias has revealed that Scindia was largely responsible for this.
Priyanka Chaturvedi was one of the most vocal spokespersons of the Congress from 2014 to 2019. She strongly supported the party in TV debates and was also very active on social media. Then, eight days before the Lok Sabha elections, he suddenly left the Congress. Scindia was also surprised by his decision, but he also had a role in it.
Priyanka Chaturvedi, who lives in Mumbai, is originally from Agra in Uttar Pradesh. In the 2019 elections, she wanted a Congress ticket from Mumbai North seat, but the party made Urmila Matondkar its candidate. Chaturvedi was already upset. Meanwhile, the party’s decision regarding an incident in Agra made him sad from inside and Chaturvedi immediately decided to leave the Congress.
The matter started in September 2018 when Priyanka Chaturvedi was holding a press conference on Rafale issue in Agra. During this, some party workers misbehaved with him at the behest of a local leader. The situation became such that Chaturvedi left the press conference in the middle and left. The youths who misbehaved and abused her had entered the room where she was sitting upset after the press conference.
Actually, discussions were going on at that time that the Congress party can field Chaturvedi in the election contest against Hema Malini from Agra. This worried the local party leaders. At that time Jyotiraditya Scindia was the general secretary of the Congress and was in charge of western Uttar Pradesh. Chaturvedi complained about this to the top leaders of the party. The matter reached Rahul Gandhi and he also talked to Scindia about this.
After this, Scindia suspended the eight party leaders responsible for the incident by issuing show cause notices to them. But after eight days everyone’s suspension was withdrawn. According to the information, the decision to withdraw the suspension was taken at the behest of Raj Babbar, who was then the president of the UP Congress. All the accused activists had tendered an apology in writing and assured that such behavior would not be repeated.
Priyanka Chaturvedi was deeply hurt by this decision of the party. He also expressed this on Twitter. Chaturvedi wrote that the goons are given more importance than those who shed blood and sweat for the party. I fight with other party people for Congress, but my own party workers misbehaved with me, still no punishment was given to them.
It is told in the book that after this Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi also talked to Scindia about this, but he refused to withdraw the decision. Scindia cited local political circumstances for this. Priyanka Chaturvedi could not bear it and left the Congress.
