The Indian team is playing a practice match against County Select XI in Durham. Rohit Sharma comes out for the toss as skipper Virat Kohli has been rested. Apart from him, vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane and veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin are also not part of the team. Not only this, Avesh Khan and Washington Sundar are playing for the opposition team i.e. County Select XI.
Rohit Sharma is leading the team in the absence of Kohli and Rahane. He won the toss and decided to bat first in the match which started on Tuesday. In this match, India’s reserve fast bowler Avesh Khan is playing for the opposing team. This was done with the consent of both the teams to give an opportunity to the Indian fast bowler to play the match.
Significantly, during Pakistan’s tour of India in 1987, 14-year-old Sachin Tendulkar was brought in as a reserve fielder for Imran Khan’s team during the match against India at the Brabourne Stadium. With Mayank Agarwal likely to open the innings alongside Rohit Sharma in the Nottingham Test against England starting on August 4, his performance in the warm-up match will be closely watched.
Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami have also been rested from this match. This is the first first-class match for the Indian team in almost 10 years. Regular wicketkeepers Rishabh Pant and Wriddhiman Saha are in quarantine, so Lokesh Rahul is keeping wickets.
Both the teams for this match are as follows
Indians (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma (captain), Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Hanuma Vihari, Lokesh Rahul (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj
County XI: Will Rhodes (capt), Rehan Ahmed, Tom Aspinwell, Ethan Bamber, James Brakey (wk), Jack Carson, Jack Chappell, Haseeb Hameed, Lyndon James, Jack Libby, Craig Miles, Liam Patpson, White James Reeve, Rob Yates.
