- Chennai SBI ATM theft case, Tamil Nadu Crime Branch is investigating
- Soon the case will be handed over to the CBI, thieves had withdrawn Rs 5 crore
- 4 prime suspects have been arrested in the case but 6 others are still absconding
A special police team of Tamil Nadu Crime Branch is probing the theft targeting SBI ATMs in the state. Preparing a final report in this matter to be handed over to the DGP. Sources in the Tamil Nadu Home Department said that the state police will soon hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in which ATM thieves took away around Rs 5 crore.
CBI is the nodal agency for investigation of banking frauds in the country especially in nationalized banks and hence the police will hand over the matter to the premier investigating agency. Tamil Nadu Police has already arrested 4 prime suspects in this case, but 6 others are still absconding. CBI investigation will be very effective in nabbing other accused also and thus preventing ATM theft in other states.
What is the link of theft with Haryana?
According to the Tamil Nadu Crime Branch special team probing the case, thieves have targeted 19 SBI ATMs in Chennai, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore and Kancheepuram over a period of seven days starting June 17. Those arrested include Amir Arsh Alimudi (37), Virendra Rawat (23), Nazim Hussain (32) and Saukath Ali (37). All four are residents of Ballabhgarh in Faridabad district of Haryana.
Police investigation has revealed that the robbers first took money from the machines and then stopped the lid from closing for some time by using their hands. The state police team probing it said that the matter would be handed over to the CBI only after the report was submitted to the DGP.
A senior police officer from the state police headquarters and a senior police officer who was part of the investigation team said, “There is a need for a CBI probe as we have to find out whether these fraudsters have duped money from ATMs in other states.” CBI is a national agency and also investigates banking frauds. Especially the nationalized banks and hence it would be better for them to handle the matter.
