Kalyan Singh, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and former Governor of Rajasthan, passed away on Saturday night at around 9.15 pm after prolonged illness. He was 89 years old. Singh’s last rites will be performed on August 23 at Narula on the banks of the Ganges. Condoling the death of Kalyan Singh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has declared three days of state mourning in Uttar Pradesh. He has also announced one day public holiday in the state on 23rd August.
In a statement issued by the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) on Saturday night, it was told that former Chief Minister Kalyan Singh passed away after prolonged illness. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit on July 4. He died on Saturday night due to prolonged illness and gradual non-functioning of body parts.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath told reporters outside the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, ‘There is sad news for all of us, former Chief Minister of the state, former Governor of Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kalyan Singh ji is no more with us. Kalyan Singh ji was unwell for the last two months, he breathed his last tonight at 9.15 pm.
He said, ‘We are all saddened, as Chief Minister and a mass leader in Uttar Pradesh, the ideals set by Kalyan Singh during his tenure towards the right, firmness and values in governance, remain the standard even today.
Irreparable loss to Indian politics- CM Yogi
Yogi Adityanath said, ‘He was the leading leader of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir movement. He had no hesitation in relinquishing power if the need arises for the construction of a grand Ram temple at the holy place of Maryada Purushottam Lord Shri Ram. On 6 December 1992, he resigned from the post of Chief Minister immediately after leaving power after the disputed structure collapsed and taking moral responsibility for this. The passing of Kalyan Singh ji is an irreparable loss not only to the society and Indian politics but also to the Bharatiya Janata Party. I pray for the peace of the departed soul.
Public holiday in the state on 23 August
The Chief Minister said, ‘The cabinet meeting was held tonight, with the passing of the condolence resolution, besides paying tribute to Kalyan Singh ji for his contribution to the state, to the country, to Indian politics, three days in the state. Along with the state mourning, the last rites were performed on the banks of Narola Ganga on Monday. August 23 will be declared a public holiday in the state, so that every person can pay homage to their late leader. All government offices, banks, educational institutions etc. will remain closed on 23rd August.
Funeral in Narula with full state honors – CM Yogi
Yogi said, ‘People will be able to pay homage to the body on Sunday morning at the residence, then in the Vidhan Bhavan and then in the party office. His body will be taken to Aligarh from here on Sunday evening. On Monday, the public will be able to have his last darshan at his Karmabhoomi, Janmabhoomi Atrauli. After that the last rites will be performed in Narola with full state honors.
Today many union ministers and BJP leaders will come to pay their last respects.

Significantly, 89-year-old Kalyan Singh was admitted to the ICU of SGPGI on July 4 last due to infection and mild unconsciousness. Earlier, he was being treated at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute.
