The schedule of Ekushey Book Fair has been changed due to the increase in coronavirus infection. From now on, the fair will run for three and a half hours every day.

The Bangla Academy announced the decision on Wednesday and it will be effective from today.

A press release signed by the director of the public relations department of the academy, Apresh Kumar Banerjee, said, “The schedule of ‘Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2021’ has been changed from March 31, 2021 in the growing corona situation in the country.” From now on, the book fair will start at 3 pm and will end at 6:30 pm. ‘

For so many days the book fair was open every day from three in the afternoon to nine at night. The fair is running on Fridays and holidays from 11 am. However, the changed decision did not say anything about the holiday.

Due to the coronavirus epidemic, the Ekushey Book Fair has been postponed from March 16 and will continue till April 14.

The Kushey Book Fair is not enduring the drought. The presence of people has also decreased. However, it has been informed in the review meeting of Bangla Academy that the fair will continue till April 14.

There were not many people on the east side of the Suhrawardy Udyan on Wednesday at the edge of the Institution of Engineers. Many stalls on this side did not sell books all day. Kavya Sultana, publisher of Usharduar Prakashan, said there were no sales at her stall in the last four days. Giving stalls, publishing new books has cost him more than six lakh rupees.

Even the stalls of big publishers are not selling well so far. Pavilion of Milon Nath, publisher of Anupam Prakashan, near the entrance of Bangla Academy. The place is pretty good. But sales are not promising. He said two-thirds of sales have fallen.

Muhammad Zafar Iqbal’s new novel ‘Nilanjana’ came to his stall on Tuesday. Each time his book sold two or three hundred copies on the first day. This time it did not happen. He commented that those who will buy books are not coming to the fair.
Many publishers say that coronary heart disease is on the rise. The weather is also not conducive to the fair. It would have been better if they had offered to do it from February 8 without holding a fair at that time. Fiction writer Mostafa Kamal made the same comment. The book fair is associated with the spirit of Ekushey. The fair was not held on time under the direction of anyone. He does not feel the pull of his heart towards the fair as the time has changed. This time four of his novels have come to the fair. Among them, the historical novel 1975 has brought another publication, Pearl has brought Aparajita.

Review meeting
A review meeting of Amar Ekushey Book Fair was held at the Shaheed Munir Chowdhury Seminar Room of Bangla Academy at 5 pm today. The meeting was presided over by Director General of the Academy Habibullah Siraj and was attended by Acting Secretary of the Academy Apresh Kumar Banerjee, Member Secretary of the Fair Jalal Ahmed, President of Bangladesh Knowledge and Creative Publishers Association Farid Ahmed, Executive Director Monirul Haque, President of Bangladesh Book Publishers and Vendors Association Shyamal Pal and Ain.

The meeting reiterated the decision to continue the fair till April 14. In addition, emphasis is placed on ensuring compliance with hygiene rules.

The first book
Two more new books have arrived at the first stall today. One of them is Anwara Syed Haque’s ‘Living Life: The Last Days with Syed Haque’. In the book, Anwara Syed Haque, the author’s wife, wrote in her diary the illness, treatment and art-literature-culture of Syed Shamsul Haque. Those precious words have come up in the book.

The other book is ‘How are the Muslims of West Bengal’ written by Milon Dutt, a journalist of Kolkata’s Anandabazar newspaper. After partition, the Muslims of West Bengal suddenly became a minority. The elite of them settled in Pakistan. Remains part of the financial and educational backwardness. How they are now, the issue has come up in this book.

Other books
194 new books have come to the fair. Among the notable books, Sheikh Hasina’s ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman: Janak is my leader is mine’. Shamsuzzaman Khan’s ‘Selected Essays’ has spoken. Soumitra Shekhar’s ‘Dhaka University and Nazrul’ brought Vibhas, AKM Shahnawaz’s ‘Indian Civilization’ brought retirement.
