A fakir named Khaleq Gazi (65) drowned in the water of a canal in Rangabali of Patuakhali while fleeing for fear of being beaten. He was trying to swim across the canal quickly. But he could no longer survive the canal.
Police recovered the body of the fakir from the Hawla Asylum Project area of Uttarkazi in Sadar Union on Saturday afternoon. Police have arrested Lal Mia, 45, and Nazmul, 22, for questioning on suspicion of involvement in the incident. Their home is in East Baherchar village of Sadar union of the upazila.
According to police and local sources, Khaleq Fakir, a resident of Fulkhali village in Chhota Baishadia union of Rangabali upazila, had been treating various diseases for a long time, including exorcism. A month ago, he took Rs 20,000 from Al Amin, son of Lal Mia of East Baherchar village, for exorcism. But as the condition of the alleged patient did not improve, he was pressuring Lal Mia to get his money back. Due to this Khaleq Fakir was fleeing. Shortly before the incident, two men came to Khaleq Fakir’s house to look for him. At that time Khaleq Fakir swam in the canal for fear of being beaten and died.
Rangabali Police Station OC Dewan Jaglul Hasan said two people have been detained for questioning in the incident. The body is being sent to Patuakhali morgue for autopsy. Legal action will be taken subject to investigation.
