Hybrid yellow sunflowers are adorned with green leaves at Ghoraghat in Dinajpur. To encourage local farmers to produce oil, sunflower has been cultivated for the first time with 60 farmers under the Agriculture Rehabilitation Program initiated by the Upazila Agriculture Office. Sunflower cultivation has created income and employment opportunities for many. The cultivation of this beautiful flower has caught the eye of the locals. The local agriculture department is expecting good yield of sunflower if the weather is favorable.
According to the Agriculture Office, 80 farmers of 4 unions and 1 municipality of the upazila have been given 1 kg seed per bigha for sunflower cultivation this season. At the same time, the Department of Agriculture is giving necessary advice to the farmers and regular inspections are being carried out on the cultivated lands of sunflower. The agriculture department has set a target of producing 32 tonnes of sunflower seeds on 12 hectares of land this year. In return, farmers will benefit financially. The local agriculture department is also hoping that this time the farmers will smile after selling sunflower seeds.
Rezaul of Varnapara village in the upazila said farmers are usually busy with paddy, wheat and other crops throughout the year so they are not looking at sunflower cultivation. This year, the interest in sunflower cultivation is increasing among many farmers due to the rehabilitation of seeds by the agriculture office.
In this regard, Upazila Agriculture Officer Ekhlach Hossain Sarkar said, sunflower cultivation is more profitable than paddy and vegetables because it requires less irrigation and less disease. Sunflower will play a vital role in meeting our growing oil demand. In addition to oil, khail can be used as fish food and tree fuel. No part of it can be thrown away. It is also possible to fill the family’s edible oil deficit by cultivating sunflower in the backyard.
