A total of 25 bodies have been recovered from a passenger launch that sank in the Shitalakshya river in Narayanganj’s Koylaghat area. The bodies were recovered after the launch was brought to the east bank of the river.
The bodies of 20 people were recovered today and 5 bodies were recovered yesterday. There are still 9 people on the missing list. The Upazila Administration and Fire Service has confirmed the information. The five bodies recovered earlier are Sunita Saha, 40, wife of Haradhan Saha of Malpara area of Munshiganj Sadar, Sakhina Begum, 45, wife of Oliullah of North Charamsura area and wife of Pritimoy Sharma of the same area. Pratima Sharma (53), Sauda Akhter Lata (18), wife of Mithun Miah of Purbapara area of Nayagaon in Sadar and an unidentified woman (34).
The passenger launch left Narayanganj for Munshiganj. The passenger launch sank near the third Shitalakshya Bridge under construction in Madanganj area at around 6 pm on Sunday. In this incident many people swam ashore. However, many were missing.
The passenger launch, which sank in the Shitalakshya river in the Koylaghat area of Narayanganj city, has been towed to shore. Attempts are being made to lift the launch with the rescue ship suffix. The sinking launch was towed on the east bank of the Shitalakshya river at around 10:30 am on Monday. An investigation committee has been formed into the incident.
Meanwhile, the bodies of four of the five bodies rescued in the launch sinking incident were handed over to their relatives around 1.30 pm on Sunday. Another 26 people are still missing in the list of upazila administration. Ahazari relatives on both sides of the river. Relatives complained that rescue work was being carried out slowly.
Shah Alam, 51, a timber trader from Rikabibazar area of Munshiganj, is missing in the launch sinking incident. He and his business partner Mohan Mia were on their way to Munshiganj from Narayanganj on Sunday evening. Mohan Mia jumped into the river and swam ashore when the launch sank due to the impact of the cargo ship on the way. Shah Alam is missing. They have not found him yet. On the other hand, Maksuda Begum (32), her husband Anwar Hossain (42) and 6-month-old daughter Irene are missing from Hoglakandi big house in Munshiganj.
In this regard, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nahida Barik told Prothom Alo that five bodies have been recovered in the incident of launch sinking. The bodies of the four have been handed over to relatives. Relatives have registered the names of 26 people who are still missing in the incident. The sunken launch has been identified and brought ashore.
The administration has paid Tk 20,000 for burying the bodies of the relatives. Meanwhile, the district administration has summoned Additional District Magistrate Khadija Taheri Bobby and formed a seven-member investigation committee into the launch sinking. The inquiry committee has been directed to submit an investigation report within the next five working days.
