The U.S. military has shut down Camp Seven, a one-time secret unit at the infamous Guantanamo Bay detention center. All the prisoners have been evacuated from there.
The news agency AP reported that the unit of the prison was in a dilapidated condition due to lack of repairs. The U.S. military says detainees are being held at another U.S. military base in Cuba.
The transfer of prisoners ended without any untoward incident.
The U.S. Army’s Southern Command says it has reduced prison costs as well as increased management efficiency and effectiveness. The prison unit has been reduced from three to two.
The Pentagon has declined to comment on the location of Camp Seven or its construction.
Journalists were never given a chance to visit this unit. And if the lawyers wanted to go to a secret place, they had to take a court order.
There were infrastructure problems because Camp Seven was not renovated. The drainage ditch would be filled with water. Electricity was often cut off. The hope of reform was also given up due to non-allocation of funds.
However, it did not say how many prisoners were evacuated. Earlier, officials said there were 14 detainees. There are currently 40 detainees at Guantanamo Bay.
