In the created world, Allah has elevated man to the position of sublime dignity. He has declared man as Ashraful Makhlukat i.e. the best creature of creation. All human beings have been created from the same source — Adam and Eve. As such, all people are entitled to equal status. But one can get superiority over the other because of certain characteristics. It is difficult to make a definite decision about who is the best person.
Rasulullah Karim (peace be upon him) has given details of those features at different times in Hadith Sharif and has introduced the best people. None of these descriptions are contradictory, each is described in terms of a particular situation. Narrated Osman: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, ‘The best of you is the one who teaches the Qur’aan himself and teaches it to others.
In another hadith, Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) was asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, who is the man of the highest rank?’ The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said, Who remembers Allah more. ‘(Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 563). One of the Companions asked, “O Messenger of Allah, who is the best man?”
Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me, ‘Do you know who is the best man? I said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “The best people are those who do good deeds with the correct knowledge of the religion.”
Narrated Abu Jarr: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, ‘I certainly know the last person to be saved from Hell and the last person to enter Paradise. A person will be brought, then Allah will say, ask about his minor sins, keep the major sins secret, then he will be told, you have committed such and such a sin, such and such a day, such and such a sin, such and such a day. He said, “Then it will be said to him, ‘There is one good for you instead of every sin.’ He said, “Then he will say, ‘O my Lord, I have done many things, but I do not see them here.’ He said, “I saw the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, smiling and even his gums came out.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2473)
