A day after gunmen stormed a prison in southern Nigeria and fled with prisoners, gunmen stormed a police station in a similar fashion. They took many detainees from there. The police station is in the town of Ehim Mabano in Emo State.
Police spokesman Orlando Ikeko said gunmen opened fire Monday after the attack. Three cars were burnt. However, he did not confirm to AFP whether there were any casualties.
According to local media reports, the assailants released several detainees.
The country’s armed forces have said they will launch a joint operation to catch the culprits.
Yesterday, the country’s vice president Yemi Osinbajo visited the prison. “None of the people who are causing this violence are progressives in this country and region,” he said. Anyone who tries to disrupt the development and peace of the region must work together.

Attacks on law enforcement are on the rise in the country’s southeast. The separatist organization Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is blamed for this. This organization has been demanding the independence of the indigenous Igbo community. However, the organization has denied the allegations against them.
Gunmen stormed a jail in the Emo state capital, Owerri, on Monday. At this time 1 thousand 744 prisoners escaped.
