A full bench of the Appellate Division has fixed April 19 for hearing on the petition filed by Irfan Selim, son of Haji Mohammad Selim, a ruling party MP from Dhaka-6 constituency, seeking revocation of bail in the case of beating of a naval officer.Appellate Division Chamber Justice Hasan Fayez Siddiqui passed the order on Thursday (April 8).Advocates Abdul Baset Majumder and Saeed Ahmed Raja represented Irfan Selim in the court today. Additional Attorney General Sheikh Mohammad Morshed represented the state.The High Court on March 18 granted bail to Irfan Selim in a case involving the beating of a naval officer, Lieutenant Wasif Ahmed Khan. Irfan Selim’s bail was suspended for four weeks on March 26 after hearing the state’s plea to stay the bail. Irfan Selim appealed to the Appellate Division Chamber Judge’s Court to revoke the stay order.
After the evening of October 25 last year, Haji Selim’s car with the ‘Member of Parliament’ sticker hit the motorcycle of Navy officer Lieutenant Wasif at Kalabagan Crossing in Dhanmondi. MP Haji Selim was not in the car at the time of the incident. His son Irfan Selim was also a security guard. The naval officer then stopped the motorcycle and introduced himself. At that moment, two men got out of Haji Selim’s car and beat Lieutenant Wasif.
At one point, the officer tried to defend himself. Wasif’s wife was also assaulted at the time. When people gathered at the spot, the assailants left the MP’s car and fled. Later, the police came and seized the car and motorcycle and took them to the police station. Navy officer Lieutenant Wasif filed a case against four people, including Haji Selim’s son Irfan Selim, at Dhanmondi Police Station on October 26 last year. Irfan Selim was arrested on the same day.
Irfan Selim’s bail application in the case was rejected by the Dhaka court on December 26 last year. Irfan Selim then applied for bail in the High Court. The High Court issued a rule on the bail question. After hearing the rule, the High Court granted bail.
Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund has arrived in Dhaka on a five-day visit at the invitation of Bangladesh Army Chief General Aziz Ahmed. He arrived in Dhaka on Thursday (April 6th) morning, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka said in a statement.
The Indian army chief is accompanied by his wife Veena Narvane and a two-member delegation.
The Chief of Army Staff of India will pay a courtesy call on the Chief of Army Staff, Navy and Acting Air Force of Bangladesh and other senior officers of the Bangladesh Army. He will also visit various military bases. The Indian Army Chief will also pay homage to the members of the Bangladesh Armed Forces who sacrificed their lives in the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971 by laying a wreath at the altar of Shikha Anirban in Dhaka Cantonment.
The Indian Army Chief will share his experience at a seminar on UN peacekeeping operations. He will also attend joint military exercises শান্ত concluding exercises, peace hardware exhibitions, and closing ceremonies.
The visit of the Indian Army Chief will further strengthen the existing close and fraternal ties between the armed forces of the two countries, the Indian High Commission said.
