Hefazat-e-Islam central joint secretary general Maulana Mamunul Haque has been remanded in custody for seven days in a vandalism case. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Devdas Chandra Adhikari passed the order after a court hearing on Monday (April 19). During the remand hearing, Mamunul Haque appealed to the court to keep him in a suitable place for worship. After the hearing, his lawyer Syed Joynal Abedin Mezbah told the media, “During the hearing, the judge asked Mamunul, ‘What do you have to say?'” This month, I am appealing for the opportunity to fast, pray and read the Qur’an. “
The court then said, ‘You will be kept in a place suitable for worship. You will not have any trouble, worship will not be interrupted. ‘
Earlier, Sub-Inspector (SI) Sajedul Haque produced Hefazat leader Mamunul in the court at around 11:09 am. At the same time, he applied for a 7-day remand for proper investigation of the case. Meanwhile, lawyer Syed Joynal Abedin Mezbah applied for bail on behalf of accused Mamunul seeking cancellation of his remand. The state, on the other hand, opposed it. Following the hearing of both the parties, the judge remanded the order.
A local man filed the case against Mamunul in 2020, alleging that he had been beaten, severely injured for murder, theft, intimidation and intentional disturbance in religious activities.
The Tejgaon Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Mamunul Haque from Jamia Rahmania Arabia Madrasa in Mohammadpur around 12:50 pm on Sunday (April 18).
It is learned that there are 18 cases against Mamunul Haque in different police stations of the capital alone. There are also cases against him in other parts of the country. According to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) headquarters, eight cases are under investigation in the Motijheel division of the Detective Branch (DB), two in the Lalbagh division and one in the Tejgaon division.
Besides, his name is in one case under investigation in Motijheel police station and four cases under investigation in Paltan police station. Of the 16 cases mentioned, 15 were filed on May 5, 2013 after the Hifazat riots at Motijheel’s Shapla Chattar. The plaintiff in those 15 cases is the police. Another of the 18 cases was recently filed with the Paltan Police Station by a Juba League leader. The case was filed against Mamunul after Hofjat chased and clashed with police, Chhatra League and Awami League in the Baitul Mukarram area of the National Mosque. Case No. 18 is the case of Mohammadpur police station.
Earlier, Maulana Mamunul Haque was arrested from Jamia Rahmania Madrasa in Mohammadpur around 12:50 pm on Sunday. He has been under surveillance by law enforcement for some time.
After the arrest, the responsible officials of the police said that Mamunul was shown his first arrest in a case of vandalism in Mohammadpur police station in 2020. He is accused in 33 cases including seven in Dhaka in 2013 for sabotage of Shapla Chattar. Mamunul has been arrested twice before. He is the accused in the cases of several police stations including Paltan, Motijheel, Brahmanbaria and Sonargaon. A chargesheet has also been filed against him in a 2013 case. The Detective Branch (DB) will arrest him in these cases.
