Mamunul in court

Central Joint Secretary General of Hefazat-e-Islam Mamunul Haque, who was arrested in a violence case, has been produced in court. He was produced in court from the DB office under special security on Monday (April 19) at around 11am. It is learned that after handing over Mamunul to the court, the police will seek a 7-day remand.

Police arrested Mamunul, the central joint secretary general of Hefazat, from Jamia Rahmania Arabia Madrasa in the capital’s Mohammadpur on Sunday (April 18th) at noon. He is the Secretary General of the Bangladesh Khilafah Majlis and the President of the Youth Majlis.

Mamunul was first arrested in a case of vandalism at Mohammadpur police station in 2020, police officials said. He is accused in 33 cases, including seven in Dhaka, for sabotage at Shapla Chattar in 2013. Mamunul has been arrested twice before. He is the accused in the cases of several police stations including Paltan, Motijheel, Brahmanbaria and Sonargaon. A chargesheet has also been filed against him in a 2013 case. The Detective Branch (DB) will arrest him in these cases.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Muha. Shafiqul Islam said, ‘Mamunul’s name has also come up in the investigation of the 2013 case. He has been charged in several cases. He is being shown arrested in all those cases.

Hefazat-e-Islam, a Qaumi madrassa-based organization, has arrested eight central and metropolitan leaders in the past week and is now in police custody. The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court has remanded the three for seven days.

Mamunul was arrested from Jamia Rahmania Arabia Madrasa in Mohammadpur around 12:30 pm and brought to the office of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Tejgaon Division of Police. At a press conference there, DC Harun Aur Rashid said, ‘We had a case of vandalism in 2020 at Mohammadpur police station. We were investigating. Based on the investigation, it has been confirmed that he is involved in the incident. In this case, we have arrested him from Jamia Rahmania Madrasa.

DC Harun said, ‘Mamunul was under our surveillance in the recent incident. He was staying in the madrasa. We strategically bring him. It did not have to face such obstacles. He said, “Police will seek a seven-day remand by presenting Mamunul in court today in the case of Mohammadpur police station.”

Later in the afternoon, Mamnul was taken to Tejgaon police station complex. There he was being interrogated, further decided on the case and taken to the Minto Road Police Detective Branch (DB) office. During interrogation at Tejgaon police station, Mamunul confessed to three marriages. He said the two women discussed were his wives. He has kept these marriages socially secret.

Mahbub Alam, joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan DB, said on Sunday, “Mamunul Haque was also involved in and incited the 2013 violence and the recent violence. He will be sent to court tomorrow (Monday) after showing his arrest in the old case.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Mohammadpur Police Station Abdul Latif confirmed the matter.

Abdul Latif said Mamunul Haque is currently in the DB office. He will be taken to court after 10 am on Monday. He will be handed over to the court and remanded for 7 days.
