Several nurses and staff, including two doctors, were physically assaulted by the relatives of the patient in the death of a newborn and maternity mother at Tala Upazila Health Complex in Satkhira. The incident took place at Tala Upazila Health Complex on Tuesday (April 20) at 7.30 pm. Upon receiving the news, the police came and brought the situation under control.
According to hospital sources, pregnant Dina Begum, 30, wife of Shahabuddin Sardar of Hazrakati village in the upazila, was admitted to Tala Hospital on Tuesday (April 20) morning for an emergency caesarean section. In the afternoon, before the start of the operation, the patient’s oxygen level was declining at an alarming rate and he was referred to Khulna Medical for better treatment. The relatives of the patient got agitated and entered the operating theater of the hospital and physically assaulted the nurses and staff including Dr. Atanu Ghosh and Dr. Farha Ferdousi. Upon receiving the news from the hospital authorities, the police immediately went to the hospital and calmed down the situation. Meanwhile, Dina Begum gave birth to a child on the way to Khulna Medical College at night. Shortly afterwards, both the newborn and the mother died.
Maternity Dina Begum’s brother-in-law Ghiyasuddin said her fiance was admitted to Tala Upazila Health Complex around 10:30 am. He was left at the hospital without any treatment. The nurses of the hospital requested a few points but the doctor said he would come later. At around 4 pm, when the condition of the mother deteriorated severely, the nurses immediately called the doctor on duty. The doctor came and decided to have a caesarean section. Although anesthetic injections were pushed into her body at the time, she did not become unconscious. He was later given another anesthetic injection. At this time the maternity condition became critical. The mother was referred to Khulna Medical College Hospital without a caesarean section. On the way to Khulna, Dina Begum gave birth to a child and both the newborn and the mother died.
Ghiyasuddin’s claim that his daughter-in-law and newborn child died due to negligence and wrong treatment of doctors. However, he apologized for the unfortunate incident inside the hospital.
Dr. Atanu Ghosh, Assistant Surgeon, Tala Health Complex, said that the pregnant patient was referred to Khulna Medical College for better treatment as her blood pressure and oxygen were declining at an alarming rate. At that time, the relatives of the patient physically assaulted him and the nurses and staff including the duty woman Dr. Farha Ferdousi. He also said that the matter has been informed to the police station in writing by the Upazila Health Complex.
Tala Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mehedi Russell said the situation was brought under control by sending police after receiving news that some nurses and staff, including doctors, were physically assaulted by the patient’s relatives. Later, the news of the death of the newborn and the mother-in-law caused tension among the relatives at the hospital and the situation was calmed down with the help of the police. Confirming the receipt of written complaint from Tala Upazila Health Complex, he said action would be taken after investigation.
