Due to the corona, the hand-made net-hat industry of rural women in Dhunat upazila of Bogra has come to a standstill. The demand for hats is higher in Ramadan than throughout the year. Hat makers are waiting for this time every year. The hats here are exported to the Middle East to meet the demand of the country. The price is as expected. They sell hats and buy new clothes for Eid and other daily necessities. But this time in Corona’s hands he is the exception. Eid is knocking on the door. But hats are not being sold. So the joy of Eid of women Kagirs is fading.
According to local sources, at least half a lakh women are involved in hat weaving in this upazila. Fake hats made by village women have made a name for themselves in several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Qatar, Pakistan and India. Many women have taken the helm of the world by making hats. Some have eradicated poverty. The demand for hats is higher in Ramadan than other times. For this reason, more hats are made in the next one month after the corpse is mentioned. At this time the income of women also increases. This time Corona has also affected the hat industry. Their income has stopped as the export of hats has stopped. Their Eid joy has faded in such a situation.
According to the women engaged in making hats, wholesalers are deprived of at least 10-15 thousand rupees before Eid because they do not buy hats. In this way, just as it has become impossible to buy and sell Eid, it will also be difficult to bear the expenses of the family. They demanded immediate government assistance.
Retailers of hats said that due to the Corona situation, most of the markets in the big cities of the country including Dhaka and Chittagong are not buying and selling as usual. Millions of rupees worth of hats are lying in the banker’s godown. Even if there are orders, they are not going to be sent abroad due to corona. So they have been forced to stop buying hats made by women.
Hossain Ali, a wholesaler of fake hats, said, “Every year we bring in a lot of foreign currency.” This year, all the owners, dealers and workers involved in the industry are living a humane life. We did not receive any grant or assistance from the government. If the industry is to survive, the government must stand by the disaster and provide incentives.
