A case has been registered against Anjarul Islam Jewel (Jewel Ahmed) and his son Nibir Ahmed for their terrorist attack on the Rangpur division of the private television channel Banglavision. Last Thursday (April 22) night, Jewel Ahmed became the plaintiff and filed the case against Muminur Rahman Ratan alias Ratan Sarkar as the main accused. Several other unidentified persons have been accused in the case.
According to the case sources, Anjarul Islam Jewel (Jewel Ahmed), son of late Tofazzal Hossain of Masterpara mahalla of Nilphamari municipal area, was working as his own reporter for the Rangpur division of private television channel Banglavision. He lives with his family at Bardhankuthi near DC in Rangpur city. Due to professional reasons, he met Muminur Rahman Ratan alias Ratan Sarkar, a resident of RK Road area of Rangpur city, son of Abul Hasan Ilias of Pragatipara mahalla of Nilphamari municipality. At one point a relationship developed with him.
Using this relationship, Ratan Sarkar was extorting money from various individuals and organizations for fear of publishing news. Apart from this, Jewel Ahmed protested against Ratan’s misdeeds including use of drugs and narcotics. As a boy from the same area, he also urged him to refrain from misdeeds. Ratan Sarkar was furious at this and at different times he was threatening to see Jewel.
On the day of the incident, last Thursday (April 22) at noon, Jewel went to the Rangpur office of Bangla Vision on the third floor of the market adjacent to the Rangpur City Corporation office to collect news of the lockdown along with cameraman Shahnewaz Johnny and trainee journalist Ahmed Farooq. After work, he left the office at half past noon to buy vegetables in the city market. While he was going down the stairs, accused Muminur Rahman Ratan alias Ratan Sarkar attacked Jewel with some identified terrorists. They started beating Jewel at random. Ratan Sarkar hit him on the head with the iron rod in his hand again as he was going down the stairs in fear. Luckily, he survived when the injury did not hit Jewel’s head and hit the railing of the stairs.
Ratan’s accomplices continued to kill, punch and kick Jewel. When he fell to the ground, accused Ratan Sarkar tried to attack again and he ran to the office of Bangla Vision and took shelter. At that time, Ratan along with his team tried to bring him out of the office and onto the road.
Meanwhile, Jewel’s eldest son, Nibir Ahmed, 18, a HSC first-year student at Rangpur Biam Laboratory School and College, met Jewel and took him to the market to be taken to the market by unknown assailants. Intense fell to the ground. At that time, the accused Ratan Sarkar grabbed the boy by the neck and tried to kill him by suffocating him. At one stage, Banglavision cameraman Shahnawaz Johnny and others came and rescued Nibir. Later, to save his life, Jewel fled from the second floor of the market and took shelter in the room of Rangpur City Corporation Mayor Mostafizur Rahman.
Meanwhile, on hearing the news, the accused took a position in front of the city building and started threatening to kill him. Later, with the help of City Corporation officials and other journalists, Jewel somehow got out of there and went home. When he reached home, he received first aid and lodged a written complaint with the police at night. Jewel has been suffering from panic among his family members since the incident.
Confirming the case, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Kotwali Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Rashid said, “After investigating the incident, the culprits will be brought under the law.”
