Police arrested at least 15 people, including Nagar Mahila Dal president and former ward councilor Monowara Begum Monih, and took them to the police station after the clash in front of the party office at Nasimon Bhaban on Monday afternoon.
As part of the central program, the Chittagong Metropolitan BNP organized a procession in front of the party office in Chittagong. Leaders and activists have been coming to Nasimon Bhaban with processions from different parts of the city since 3 pm to take part in it.
Witnesses said the clash started at around 3:30 pm when a procession from Kazi Deuri entered the party office and hurled stones at the police.
Meanwhile, BNP activists set fire to various items and a motorcycle on the side of the road. Ratha vandalized a few more motorcycles. Sharp weapons were also seen in the hands of some of them.
At one stage, the clash spread when additional police came and chased the BNP workers. A few rounds of blank shots were fired to bring the situation under control, police officials said.

“The attack was planned,” police said
Chittagong City Police Deputy Commissioner (South) SM Mehedi Hasan told reporters, “BNP activists have planned to attack the police. Shibir workers also took part there. ”
He said, “They attacked the police from the procession without any reason to create anarchy. They set fire to various items on the sidewalk and started vandalism. ”
At least six policemen, including women, were injured in the incident, Deputy Commissioner Mehedi said.
Witnesses said a small number of police were in front of the BNP office at the start of the rally. At that time, when the procession attacked, the police retreated. Later additional police went and brought the situation under control.
On the other hand, blaming the police for the clash, Chittagong Metropolitan BNP member secretary Abul Hashem Bakkar said the police had “attacked” their “peaceful” procession.
