Meghna’s prominent UP chairman Abbasi arrested

Meghna Police Station OC Abdul Majid said several teams of district police conducted a joint operation and arrested Abbasi on Wednesday after Farooq Sarkar confirmed the suspension of the Appellate Division’s bail four weeks in advance from the High Court.

According to the police, the main accused in the murder case of Nazma Begum Farooq Sarkar Abbasi, younger brother Yar Hossain and 10 others have been arrested so far.

He came to the fore in 1996 with the assassination of filmmaker Sohail Chowdhury. He was later charged with four counts of murder, including three counts of aggravated robbery. In addition, there are widespread allegations of attempted murder, assault, possession, extortion. He is Farooq Sarkar Abbasi, the current chairman of Bhaorkhola Union. Last month, Abbasi was accused of attacking an election rival’s home and killing a woman in the family. Police have not yet arrested him.

Abbasi became the chairman of the 2016 Union Parishad elections as an Awami League-backed candidate. However, local Awami League leaders and activists say Abbasi never had a position in the party. On July 30, 1999, the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police filed a chargesheet in the case. Nine people, including businessman Aziz Mohammad Bhai, were named in the chargesheet. The other accused in the case are Afaqul Islam alias Bunty Islam, owner of the Trump Club, Ashish Chowdhury and top terrorists Sanjidul Islam (Emon), Adnan Siddiqui, Tariq Saeed Mamun, Selim Khan and Harun Aur Rashid alias Leather Liton. Sources involved in the investigation of the case say that Farooq Abbasi took part in the murder of Sohail Chowdhury as a ‘shooter’ through the Hazaribagh-based criminal gang. The proceedings in the Sohel Chowdhury murder case have been stayed following the High Court’s plea. The trial of the case has not started even after 23 years.

According to Abbasi’s relatives, Farooq Abbasi’s younger sister Lucky Akhter got married to Mizanur Rahman, son of Sultan Haji of Sonargaon in Narayanganj in 2000. It is alleged that Abbasi killed his daughter Reena (30) and her two children Shabni (6) and Anik (5) due to a conflict with the family. The trial of the case is not over yet.

The Sonargaon representative of Prothom Alo recently spoke to the plaintiff in the case, Habibur Rahman, brother of the slain Reena. Habibur Rahman said that Abbasi and his sister Lucky took Reena and her two children from Sonargaon to Dhaka in 2003. Their bodies were later found in a dustbin in Mohammadpur area. The bodies of the two slain children also had cigarette burn marks. Habibur filed a case with Sonargaon police station alleging abduction and murder. Although Abbasi’s two brothers were arrested in that case, Farooq Abbasi was not arrested. The case is still pending in the Narayanganj Second Judge’s Court.
According to multiple sources, the plaintiff in the case Habibur Rahman has written to the court that he has no objection if Farooq Abbasi is granted bail. Abbasi then surrendered to the court and was granted bail.
