Eight people, including a woman, were injured in a clash between supporters of two chairman candidates of Baheratla North Union Parishad (UP) in Shibchar Upazila. At that time, there were allegations of vandalism of the election camp and attack on the house.
The incident took place in Sotarpar area of the union on Friday, April 2 at around 9 pm.
The injured are Idris Akon (50), Likhan Akon (23), Mahmuda (42), Emon (25), Jabed (30) and Rahman (19). The injured have been admitted to the Upazila Health Complex. However, Mahmudar’s condition was critical and he was shifted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
According to the injured and local sources, a man named Almash Sikder of Sotarpar area of the union rented a shop at Sotarpar bus stand to support his chairman candidate Zakir Hossain Haider for the election camp. Almash Sikder had been having a dispute with another chairman candidate Md. Nurul Haque Sikder for several days over the incident. In the incident tonight, 10/12 people including Azizul Sikder, Shaon Sikder, Awlad Sikder, supporters of Nurul Haque Sikder attacked the election camp and house. At that time 6 people were injured. The injured have been admitted to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex. One of them is being taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital as his condition is critical. There were also allegations of attacks on election camps and homes.
Later, a police team led by Shibchar Police Station OC Mohammad Miraj Hossain visited the spot and the hospital.
Dr. Soumitra Roy, a doctor at the emergency department of Shibchar Upazila Health Complex, said the patients came to the hospital around 10 pm with injuries. One of them was rushed to Faridpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Everyone else is admitted here.
Shibchar police officer in charge (OC) said. Miraj Hossain said, “We have visited the spot and the hospital.” A case is pending in this regard.
