During the strike called by Hefazat-e-Islam, the Brahmanbaria Press Club was vandalized on March 26 and the president of the organization Riaz Uddin was beaten. The Brahmanbaria Press Club called for a boycott of Hefazat’s news in protest. Meanwhile, some central and local leaders of Hefazat suddenly appeared at the press club on Monday afternoon.
Hefazat leaders demanded that the real culprits be identified through an investigation after seeing video footage of attacks, vandalism, arson and violence in Brahmanbaria from March 26 to 28. During those three days, attacks, vandalism, arson and violence were carried out at the district railway station, various government and non-government organizations.
Amir Sajidur Rahman, Naib of Central Custody, General Secretary of District Custody and Principal of Jamia Islamia Younusia Madrasa in Kandipara of the district town Mufti Md. Mubarakullah, Maulana Ali Azam, Mufti Borhan Uddin Qasemi, Mufti Noman Habibi, Mufti Borhan Uddin Al Matin and others came to Brahmanbaria Press Club.
Jabed Rahim, general secretary of the press club, said that the incidents of attack, vandalism, arson and violence in Brahmanbaria from March 26 to 28 were part of the news gathering. But when they tried to do these things, the leaders and activists of Hifazat obstructed the journalists of the district and started beating them. He asked the Hifazat leaders, “Have journalists become Hifazat targets?”
Mubarakullah, general secretary of Hefazat district, spoke first on behalf of Hefazat. He said they took out a peaceful procession on the morning of March 26. After the prayer, go back with everyone. They did not know when or what happened next. “As far as I know and believe, none of us are involved in these incidents,” he said. We condemn all incidents including vandalism. Regarding the sudden arrival of Hifazat leaders at the press club, General Secretary Jabed Rahim said, “Hifazat leaders and activists came to the press club without informing anything. As they have expressed regret and demanded punishment for those involved in the incident after seeing the video footage, Hefazat’s news boycott program will be considered to be discussed with other members of the press club.
Riazuddin Prothom Alo, president of the Press Club, who was injured in the attack on the day of Hifazat’s strike, said the miscreants attacked him. Strike callers (custody) and law enforcers have to take responsibility for this.
