Thisara Perera now owns six sixes in the over

Twice in a month, cricket saw 6 balls and 6 sixes, it is a rare event. Earlier this month, Kieron Pollard hit six sixes in an over by Akila Dhananjaya in the T20I against Sri Lanka. Less than a month later, six more sixes occurred in recognized cricket. This time it was Sri Lankan batsman Thisara Perera who achieved this feat in the domestic cricket tournament.

Perera, captain of Army Sports Cricket Club, hit six sixes in one over in an unbeaten 52-ball 13-ball innings against Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club in Sri Lanka’s List A cricket. This is the first time in the history of Sri Lankan cricket that a batsman has hit six sixes in competitive cricket.

At the same time, the record for the second fastest half-century in Sri Lankan domestic cricket is now next to Perera’s name. Kaushalya Viraratne of Ragana Cricket Club made fifty off 12 balls against Kurungala Youth Cricket Club in November 2005. That is still the record for the fastest half-century in the history of Sri Lanka. In that match, Viraratne hit two fours and six sixes in an innings of 6 runs off 16 balls. He hit 5 sixes in one over.

Army Sports Cricket Club scored 317 runs in 41 overs after batting at Panagoda ground yesterday. When captain Perera came down to bat at number 5, 20 balls left in the innings, the team scored 256 runs. It could not be predicted that it would cross 300 in one go. Pereira’s attack was actually on Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club’s experienced cricketer and part-time off-spinner Dilhan Curry. In his last over, he sent all the balls out of bounds. The rain-soaked match, however, was abandoned after Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club scored 63 for six.
In competitive cricket, 9 cricketers hit six sixes in one over. Perera, West Indies legend Sir Gary Sobers, India’s Robi Shastri, South Africa’s Herschel Gibbs, India’s Yuvraj Singh, England’s Ross Whiteley, Afghanistan’s Hazratullah Zazai and New Zealand’s Leo Carter have hit six sixes in an over before Perera, Pollard. Of these, only three have achieved fame in international cricket. Yuvraj Singh and Kieron Pollard in T20, Herschelle Gibbs in ODI.
