Karnafuli tunnel on the way to touch the dream. Overall work progress has been 6 percent. The progress of ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel’ at the bottom of Karnafuli river has exceeded the expectations. The project stakeholders claim that if this speed can be maintained, this will be the first tunnel in the country to be opened for traffic before the scheduled time.
Harunur Rashid Chowdhury, project director of the tunnel, said, “The construction of the tunnel is going on at the expected pace.” In the meantime, the overall work progress has been 7 percent. I hope the construction of the tunnel will be completed a little before the scheduled time. ‘It is learned that the construction of the first tunnel in the bottom of the Karnafuli river is going on. The infrastructural development work of the tunnel is going on on the two banks including the bottom of Karnafuli, the city end of the river and the end of Anwara upazila. Thousands of local and foreign workers are working day and night to convert the river bed into a tunnel. In the meantime, infrastructural development work is underway to make the first tube suitable for traffic. Road construction and other development works are going on in that tube. The excavation of the second tube is also going on rapidly. In the meantime, the second tube has been dug 650 meters. Work is also underway to build a link road to connect the two banks of the river with the tunnel. The construction work of the flyover connected with the connecting road is also going on in parallel. Slabs have already been installed in some places. Girders are being made in some areas. The construction of bridges and culverts of the link road is also going on uniformly.
The tunnel is being constructed on the Karnafuli river to transform Chittagong city and Anwara into ‘One City to Town’ in the style of Shanghai metropolis of China. At one end of the tunnel is Anwar’s heavy industrial area. At the other end is Chittagong metropolis, air and sea ports. The government decided to build a tunnel at the bottom of the Karnafuli river to connect the two parts. The Government of Bangladesh and Chinese Exim Bank are co-financing the project. Expenditure has been estimated at Tk 10,384.42 crore. The target is to open the tunnel to traffic by 2022. It is estimated that about 83 lakh vehicles will run every year if it is fully operational. If the project is launched in full swing, the economy of Chittagong and the country will change. Revolutionary changes will come in industry and tourism.
