After the eviction drive, river bank protection work is going on around Dhaka. However, the government has not yet taken any effective initiative to decontaminate the river. The lives of the people on the banks of the river are being poisoned day by day. The river water around Dhaka contains industrial waste, sewage, antibiotics, penicillin and many other high levels of harmful substances.
According to the data, about 1.17 million cubic meters of sewage is falling in the rivers around Dhaka every day through sewerage lines and canals. And about 260,000 cubic meters of solid waste is falling into the river, this living entity of nature. In all, about 400 drainage and sewerage lines are being used to kill the river around the capital.
All the rubbish and excrement of the passengers of millions of ships are going directly into the river water. So that people on the banks of the river are suffering from skin diseases, typhoid, jaundice or hepatitis.
The BIWTA chairman said no new launches were being approved without the ETP system. And the local government minister says ETP is being set up around Dhaka in coordination with City Corporation and WASA.
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Tajul Islam said the canals have already been handed over to the city corporations and they have been given the responsibility of renovating them.
State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said work was underway to bring ships from Japan and Korea to lift the riverbed waste.
The concerned people think that the work of protecting the river banks around Dhaka which has been going on for the last three years will become meaningless if the water cannot be made usable by de-pollution.
