Alleged murder of housewife for dowry, husband-in-law in jail

A housewife named Shilpi Rani Das (19) was allegedly strangled to death for dowry a month and a half after her marriage at Palash in Narsingdi. Police have arrested the housewife’s husband and father-in-law in the incident at Jinardi village in Jinardi union of the upazila on Monday noon.

The deceased have been identified as Shyamal Das, 25, and her father Bimal Das, 45. Their home is in Jinardi. They both run a saloon in Narsundar and Jinardi markets by profession. When they were taken to the Narsingdi court on Tuesday afternoon, Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Sheikh Saadi ordered them to be sent to jail.

The deceased was identified as Rani Das, daughter of Pradeep Chandra Das of Nabinagar upazila in Brahmanbaria district. Shubh Chandra Das filed a case against the artiste’s husband and father-in-law at Palash police station yesterday afternoon. Later that night, the police conducted a raid and arrested the two accused.

Family members and locals of the slain artist said that the artist Rani Das got married to Shyamal Chandra Das a month and a half ago (February 21). At the time of the marriage, the boy’s family was to be given a dowry of 1 lakh 10 thousand rupees in cash and 1 gold ornament. But the girl’s family gave the boy one lakh rupees in cash and half a gold ornament on the day before the wedding. The remaining half of the dowry is to be given after the gold ornaments and 10 thousand rupees.


But a week after the marriage, the artist was tortured to bring the rest of the dowry money and gold ornaments. Unable to bear it, the artist called his father’s house more than once. Each time he asked them to pay the rest of the dowry money and gold ornaments quickly. In the meantime, the murder took place.

Upon receiving the news, the police of Palash police station recovered the body of artist Rani Das from the house. The body was sent to the morgue of Narsingdi Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

Shubh Chandra Das, the plaintiff in the case and brother of the slain housewife, said, ‘We asked the boy’s family for six months to pay the remaining money and gold ornaments. They tortured and killed my sister for only 10,000 rupees and half a ounce of gold. I want the maximum punishment for those who killed my sister. ‘

Palash police officer in charge (OC) Sheikh. Nasir Uddin said that marks of injuries were found on various parts of the body of the slain artist Rani Das. The accused husband and father-in-law have been arrested and sent to court. The court judge sent them to jail.
