Police have arrested two members of the militant group JMB, saying they were involved in several recent robberies in Dhaka.
The arrested persons are Asifur Rahman alias Asif (26) and Piyas Sheikh (28). Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police arrested them in a raid in Tejturi Bazar area of the capital on Monday afternoon. A foreign pistol, two bullets, four mobile phones and Rs 35,000 were recovered from them. They were remanded for four days on Tuesday following a court order.
Wahidul Islam, deputy commissioner of the Tejgaon division of the Detective Branch (DB), told Prothom Alo that six robberies took place in Hatirjheel, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and Mohammadpur areas of the capital from October 20 last year to February 8 this year. Some 14 people have been arrested in connection with the robbery. Four of them have given confessional statements in court.
Members of the remanded JMB said during interrogation that their accomplices, who had fled with them, had carried out the robberies to raise funds for the organization. The two arrested militants also named some of the robbers.
According to DB sources, they received information on Monday afternoon that some members of the banned JMB had gathered in the Tejturi market area to carry out sabotage and terrorist activities. Based on this information, they raided the place and arrested the two, but seven or eight JMB members escaped. A case has been filed against the two arrested JMB members at Tejgaon police station under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The court granted them four days remand in the case.
