Attempted attack on Capitol Hill, 2 killed

Attempts have been made to attack Capitol Hill in the United States again. A police officer and a suspected assailant were killed. One police officer was injured. He was taken to hospital. “It’s heartbreaking to hear of this violent attack,” said President Joe Biden. He expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family members of the slain police officer and to all those who were saddened by his death. Democrat Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the House of Representatives, made a similar comment. He described the slain police officer as a “martyr for democracy”.Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican Senate Minority Leader Mish McConnell mourned. Police said a car entered their security perimeter. Earlier, the driver of the vehicle stabbed the police officers. As a result, police officers fired directly at him. The attacker was killed. The attack came three months after the January 8th horrific attack. However, apparently there is no link between the attack and terrorism. The Capitol Hill building was again locked down shortly after the attack. This was reported by the online BBC. “Whether the attacker attacks law enforcement or anyone else, we want to get to the root of it and we will do it,” said Robert Conti, acting chief of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., after the attack. It is our responsibility. “One of our officers died of his injuries,” said Jogend Pitman, acting chief of the Capitol Police. It is heartbreaking to say that. In a later statement, he named the slain police officer as William Billy Evans. He served in the Capitol Police for 18 years. He was part of the first respondent unit in this department. Two law enforcement sources involved in the investigation said the attacker was a 25-year-old man. His name is Noah Green. He settled in Indiana, USA. Police said they had no prior information about him. Meanwhile, in mid-March, Noah Green wrote on a now defunct Facebook page that he had recently quit his job. He did this out of remorse. At the same time he said that he did it in search of spirituality. Green was suffering from side effects from taking some unknown drugs, he added. He also wrote that he was very interested in the Nation of Islam, a black nationalist religious organization. Meanwhile, a Facebook spokesperson confirmed that the extinct page belonged to Noah Green.

Security has been beefed up around the Capitol Hill building following the attack. Especially around the place where this incident took place, security has been covered. The Congress is currently on vacation. As a result, not many politicians were present inside at the time of the attack. At around 1pm local time, the Capital Police Alert System sends an email to lawmakers and their staff. They are told to stay away from outside windows and doors. If there is anyone outside the building, he or she is asked to evacuate safely. The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a police recruiting center at North Barricade. He got out of the car. Police chased after the members. One of them pulled out a weapon and shot the assailant. Earlier, he stabbed police officers. They were taken to hospital. One was taken in an ambulance, the other in a police cruiser. Footage from the scene showed a helicopter hovering overhead. At one point, two people were shown being carried on stretchers to the ambulance. Witnesses were immediately told to leave the area. Police said the attacker died of his injuries at around 1.30pm. Police Chief Conti said the attacker appeared to have carried out the attack alone. The FBI’s Washington Field Office says it is providing overall support to the Capitol Police.
Tensions have been high on Capitol Hill for more than three months. This is the situation after the brutal attack on January 8 by the supporters of former President Donald Trump. The complex is fenced with barbed wire. Metal fences have been built. Security has been enhanced. How the attacker got the courage to carry out such an attack has made the security officials think anew.
