The United States has agreed to withdraw US troops from Iraq. Baghdad and Washington have already reached an agreement.

The two countries said in a joint statement on Wednesday.

The statement said all US troops on the battlefield would be withdrawn from Iraq. The U.S. government says Iraqi forces have the capability to fight.
According to the French news agency AFP, the withdrawal of troops was agreed after the first strategic talks between Iraq and the United States during the administration of President Joe Biden.

The statement added that Iraq would only have some troops for training.

All combat troops were withdrawn from Iraq under former President Barack Obama, but were withdrawn in 2014 in the name of fighting the militant group Daesh.

There is widespread pressure from various Iraqi political parties and organizations to withdraw US troops. The pressure mounted in January last year when US forces killed Lieutenant General Qasim Solaimani, the head of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC’s Quds Force, in a terrorist attack on Iraqi soil. Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of the popular Iraqi volunteer group Hashad al-Shabir, was also killed in the US terrorist attack.
